First day of vacation and this is what I wake up to. This blows.

After Weeks...

It snowed for the first time in weeks.....in fact its been almost as long as the amount of time I have spent away from posting on here. This has been a very atypical winter for us. Last year we were buried under several feet of snow. Before today storm, which was only about 6 inches, we could see patches of grass. The temperatures have been much warmer than normal as well, causing maple syrup season to start early here in Maine. In fact, Tony and I may try tapping a few of our own maples this year.

First Snow

Well we made it pretty far without snow but now have about 5 inches on the ground. Luckily it was a beautiful day today, so some of that has already melted.

I have been amazed and in love with these little violets that are still in bloom in our cold December. I dug them out of the snow this morning and will be sad to see them go.

Damn You Winter!

We got dumped on by this last storm. Woke up to two and a half feet of new snow. Add one more snowday on top of February Vacation. We also lost power for about 5 hours. I have been shoveling lots and lots of snow all day....

The weight of it all

Yes, it is snowing. We are supposed to get another foot today. That should push this winter's total accumulations to 11' for us. It is insane. The state is running out of salt for the roads and Portland is talking about buying some million dollar snow melting machine. There is just nowhere to put this much snow.

Our latest snow damage (after the collapse of the chicken run and the snow damn/leaks on the house) is a collapsed roof off the back of the garage. Luckily it is not the garage roof, just a small storage area with open sides. I was nervous because the oil tank to the garage is covered by that roof, but if fell just right, sparing the oil tank by mere inches. We were also lucky that there was no major damage to the attachement points on the garage.

I shoveled the chicken coops roof again, for fearing of that collapsing on our girls. The coop is completely buried by the snow, so much so that it is a struggle for us to open the side door to give them food and water. I guess on the plus side of it being buried, it is staying a little warmer on the interior for them.

I think by the end of the day today, the majority of the windows in the house will be completely blocked by the snow. How depressing.

Few more pictured for you. These aren't the pretty side of the snow. These are the pictures of the mess we are constantly trying to dig out of. The temps have been pretty brutal, wind chills pushing -20.
T and I have been keeping busy working in the house today. We are still doing stuff to the bathroom and trying to get the house cleaned up for Mom and my sisters visit this week. Thank God for school vacation. Will post more later, it's 8:45 and we are just now having dinner.

Buried

This is getting ridiculous. The chicken run caved in under the weight of the snow. We can't get to the small door of the coop to close it now and it's in the single digits with negative temperatures due to windchill. The side door to the coop won't close all the way either because the snow is packed in and jamming it open.



We have some pretty major ice damns going on in two different spots of the roof.


The lower halves of the windows are blacked out by the snow.

Our driveway is still a mess, the walk ways are too narrow and another storm is coming tomorrrow night.

Grey Days

I am still here. Just haven't really felt like posting. It has been snowing for days now and is supposed to continue on and off throughout the weekend. I am so sick of winter. I have been thinking about my gardens and planning what seeds to order. I still have so long to wait before I can do anything though.
We have had to pick up our mail at the post office for the last 3 weeks because we are unable to dig out our mailbox. The driveway is a mess, and continues getting narrower and narrower with every storm. The biggest problem is finding places to put all of the snow. All of the snowbanks are shoulder level or higher for me so soon it will be impossible for me to lift the shovel high enough. The worst part of these storms is that they are alternating between snow sleet and ice. This makes it so heavy. Last week it was impossible to clear the snow because there was a thick crust of ice across the surface.


I did my best to shovel off some of the roof to the chicken coop today. You can see it sagging from the inside and seeing as the chickens won't venture out in the snow, I am afraid the roof will collapse on them.


I am sick of posting boring snow pictures. Hopefully me posts will be a little more exciting next time.
